Out of thousands of design universities, Aalto University in Finland ranks at #9 and I had the honour to design their standout virtual tour experience which won the European Design Award Silver

Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers, where science and art meet technology and business. Designing its virtual campus experience became one of the most meaningful projects of my career.
By merging three leading Finnish universities in 2010, Aalto was founded to work as a societally embedded research university. In a short space of time, it became a forerunner in its key areas. In the QS Rankings 2020, Aalto University ranked number 7 in the world for Arts & Design.
This is the story behind the creation of Aalto University’s Virtual Campus Experience.
Bringing the Aalto campus online
Aalto’s campus is located in Espoo, Finland. It is known for its lush green areas, refreshing nature, distinctive architecture, and multifunctional facilities. Much of the university’s character comes from the relationship between those things: the spaces, the atmosphere, and the people using them.
Aalto was looking for a 360° customised virtual campus tour that would let people experience the campus and its atmosphere in an immersive and interactive way, regardless of where they lived.
That mattered to prospective students, exchange students, researchers, and faculty members who were considering where to study or work but could not visit in person because of time, financial, or pandemic travel constraints.
The challenge was not simply to display the campus remotely. It was to give people a meaningful first impression of Aalto before they arrived.
Because of the university’s reputation and strong visual identity, the experience also had to feel unmistakably Aalto. It needed to reflect and strengthen the brand at every level, from the overall structure to the smallest interaction.
A close collaboration with TUUR and Xfiner
To answer Aalto’s brief, Estonian virtual tour producer TUUR won the tender to create a one-of-a-kind virtual campus experience. I was the art director and lead designer, working with Xfiner’s UX/UI team to shape the interface, interactions, and visual direction.
When the project began, the studio was known as Bitfiner. The team and I had already developed a strong working rhythm through previous projects, which gave us a good foundation for a demanding collaboration with TUUR and Aalto University.
TUUR brought the virtual-tour production, photography, and video expertise. Together with the Xfiner UX/UI team, I worked on the experience architecture, visual language, navigation, interaction design, and the way all of the content came together.
Designing an experience, not just a tour
A virtual campus can easily become a collection of panoramic images with a menu placed on top. We wanted this to feel more considered than that.
Every element, from the 360° photos and videos to the audio, text, intro animation, visual style, graphical elements, and interactions, received careful attention from everyone involved. The goal was to make the experience feel coherent, welcoming, and worth exploring.
